The Brisbane West Chamber of Commerce Inc

The History of the Chamber

The Brisbane West Chamber of Commerce Inc (BWCC) was founded in 1989 to foster trade, commerce and industry in the local area and was formerly known as the Toowong Chamber of Commerce. The BWCC takes a two pronged approach to its charter.

Firstly, it acts as the voice of the local business community on all relevant matters. For example, the Toowong Traffic Study was a project undertaken by the Chamber in conjunction with the State Government and the Brisbane City Council (BCC). As a result of this study, significant improvements have been implemented and a long term plan exists for handling traffic flows. The Chamber continues to be represented on the BCC's Traffic Reference Group and the Toowong Major Centre Plan Group.

The second approach is to encourage networking among members. This is achieved through regular breakfast meetings, after work drinks, joint functions with neighbouring Chambers, a Christmas party and an annual golf day.

In recent years the Chamber has also involved itself in assistance to the general community. In 2003 it guaranteed funding to help the publication of a book to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the town of Toowong. In the following year, the Chamber gave guidance and advice to the Toowong Senior Citizens Association and retains an on-going supportive relationship with that organisation.
